Kia ora tātou,

It’s hard to believe we are nearing the end of 2024. It’s certainly been another busy year. Whether you’re wrapping up exams or final assessments, or preparing for a summer break, I hope you’re able to keep the momentum going and finish the year strong.

Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)

The University recently had a strong presence at CHOGM events in Samoa, participating in the Pacific and Commonwealth Universities Expo [https://uoa.custhelp.com/rd?1=AvN8~wqZDv8S~xb~Gv_S~yLVlaoqdR37ufSHSz7~Pv9O&2=41588] to discuss collaboration for a resilient future and the People’s Forum 2024 [https://uoa.custhelp.com/rd?1=AvN8~wqZDv8S~xb~Gv_S~yLVlaoqdR37ufSHSz7~Pv9O&2=41589], which addressed urgent justice and social issues. Additionally, the Pacific Academy of Sciences [https://uoa.custhelp.com/rd?1=AvN8~wqZDv8S~xb~Gv_S~yLVlaoqdR37ufSHSz7~Pv9O&2=41590] launched with our Pro Vice-Chancellor Pacific Jemaima Tiatia-Siau appointed as a Foundation Fellow, and Emeritus Professor Sir Peter Gluckman, Director of Koi Tu: The Centre for Informed Futures, named as the Academy’s first honorary fellow. Associate Professor Sir Collin Tukuitonga was instrumental in the Academy’s creation as co-chair of the establishment committee. It’s excellent to see the University making great strides to advance Pacific research capability and education, aligning with our strategic plan.

Recreation Centre

After many years of planning, our fantastic new Recreation Centre is opening this month. Championed by former Vice-Chancellor Sir Colin Maiden, the vision was a vibrant hub where our community could play sports, maintain fitness, have fun and socialise. This vision has now come to life, providing our University with a world-class facility that enhances community wellbeing but also enriches students’ education and overall University experience. Further information, including membership details, are available on the New Recreation Centre webpage [https://uoa.custhelp.com/rd?1=AvN8~wqZDv8S~xb~Gv_S~yLVlaoqdR37ufSHSz7~Pv9O&2=41591].

Ngā mihi nui,

Dawn
