Kia ora koutou,
The University values and protects academic freedom and institutional autonomy as fundamental to the distinct nature and character of a university. To this end, we have undertaken extensive work over the past few years to explore a policy that addresses both academic freedom and freedom of expression in our particular context in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We are taking a significant step forward today by sharing a draft Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom Policy for feedback from the University community. It is open for staff and student consultation until 5pm on Friday 28 June.
It has taken comprehensive research, consultation, and multiple workgroups to get to this point, and I want to thank everyone who has assisted and provided input so far.
Once refined and finalised, this policy will be integral to our role as critic and conscience in society. I encourage you all to review the draft policy and provide your feedback to academicfreedom.consultation@auckland.ac.nz [academicfreedom.consultation@auckland.ac.nz]. There will also be other opportunities for dialogue on the draft policy during the consultation period. Your input is critical to making sure we have a robust and fit-for-purpose policy.
Our commitment to encouraging respectful dialogue and the free exchange of ideas is central to this policy. It reflects our statutory obligations regarding the well-being of staff and students and to maintain the highest ethical standards.
Further information about the draft policy, along with FAQs and explanatory scenarios, can be viewed on the Draft Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom Policy notice page [https://uoa.custhelp.com/rd?1=AvN_~wopDv8S~xb~Gv_U~yJllaoqdR37ufS6Sz7~Pv9z&2=41336].
Following the consultation period, the Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom Advisory Group will review the submissions and prepare a final draft policy to be considered by Senate in July. Council will consider the policy, along with advice from Senate, at its August meeting.
We look forward to receiving your feedback and thank you for your engagement with this important process.
Ngā mihi nui,
Dawn
