UC Receives Five Star Rating From QS

The University of Canterbury (UC) is the only New Zealand university to receive a five star ranking from the international university ranking research company QS.

According to the QS performance indicators, UC excels in research, teaching, infrastructure, internationalisation, specialisations, engineering and technology.

UC achieved the maximum score for the reputation among academics, based on the academic survey data of the QS world university rankings. It also scored highly in the research paper per faculty indicator.

When it comes to teaching, UC has been awarded the maximum points available for overall student satisfaction and it nearly scored full marks for satisfaction with teaching.

For the infrastructure category, UC excels in IT infrastructure. Equally excellent are the library facilities and the medical facilities. Its student societies are also world-class, QS said.

A strong area appears to be internationalisation, where UC scored the maximum points for the proportion of international students and faculty as well as for the number of institutional research collaborations. It achieved the maximum score for the support of international students.

UC is also a five stars university in the research category.

In the engagement category, UC achieved the maximum score for scholarships and bursaries it offers, which is a positive results as it fostered accessibility.

UC scored maximum points in industrial research and spin-off companies, while in the patents criterion there is room for growth, QS said.

In internationalisation, UC achieved international recognition for the broad subject areas of engineering and IT and in the specific subjects the best recognised are civil engineering and accounting. It also scored maximum points for international accreditations, Ben Sowter, head of the QS Intelligence Unit, said.

``The University of Canterbury, having undergone the independent QS Stars evaluation, has been awarded a five star rating overall as well as in five of eight evaluated areas, placing them among the world’s elite in terms of teaching, research, internationalisation and infrastructure.”

UC is rated in the top three percent of universities in the world, according to the latest QS rankings.
