Top Alumni Honoured

Six University of Auckland graduates who have risen to great heights in law, surgery, business entrepreneurship, politics and science are being honoured later this week.

Each will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University at a gala dinner on 4 March being attended by 460.

“The awards are for graduates who have made outstanding contributions to their professions, their communities and the nation,” said the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stuart McCutcheon. “This year’s crop have excelled and made a difference in high-profile fields to the betterment of society at large.”

The Distinguished Alumni are:
The Rt Hon Sir Peter Blanchard, Supreme Court judge and a former member of the Law Commission.
Dr Greg Brick, orthopaedic surgeon and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School who funds a tuition scholarship for a medical student at Auckland.
Tony Falkenstein, entrepreneur and CEO of Just Water International Ltd who established New Zealand’s first business high school.
Jeanette Fitzsimons, Green Party co-leader from 1995-2009 and a former Planning lecturer at the University.
The Hon Mike Rann, South Australia Premier since 2002 and Leader of the Labor Party in South Australia.

The Young Alumna of the Year is Dr Claire French, a top emerging scientist and biotechnology patent executive.

On 5 March all six will take part in “Auckland Live! Inspiring minds at The University of Auckland”, a free public event featuring panel discussions and presentations. It will also showcase commercial research being conducted by the University.
