Maori Party farewells young gifted lawyer
The Maori Party is saddened at the passing today of young Maori lawyer Jolene Patuawa-Tuilave of Te Roroa, Ngati Torehina and Te Uri o Hau.
“It is indeed a sad time for Jolene’s whanau, friends, legal colleagues and all of us who enjoyed the leadership she provided,” Maori Party justice spokesperson Rahui Katene said.
“I recall first seeing Jolene in various Waitangi Tribunal hearings where she represented a number of hapu and iwi with mana, great spirit and strength.
“Today the Maori nation is at a huge loss because her passing, and we want to send our aroha especially to her husband and two children,” Mrs Katene said.
Jolene was the co-president of Te Hunga Roia Maori o Aotearoa. She graduated from Otago University in 2000 and then on to work for the firm Holland Beckett in Tauranga, followed by Kensington Swan then Jackson Reeves back in Tauranga.
Over 10 years she represented a number of iwi in their Treaty claims including those in the Tauranga, Central North Island, Northland, East Coast, Whanganui, National Park and Rotorua.
