Tony Sewell appointed to UC Council

Tony Sewell, Chief Executive of Ngai Tahu Property Limited, has been appointed to the University of Canterbury Council.

Mr Sewell’s appointment to the University’s governing body has been made in consultation with the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.

Mr Sewell has held the role of Chief Executive of Ngāi Tahu Property Limited since its establishment in 1994. He has led the iwi-owned business from an asset base of $2 million, to become the South Island’s strongest property company with an asset base now in excess of $400 million and a staff of 21 property professionals.

Mr Sewell has a construction and property background with experience in quantity surveying, project management, property development and investment. In 2004 he was the recipient of the NZ Property Institute Award - the premier award of the Property Institute of New Zealand.

In the late 1990s Mr Sewell played a major role in negotiating with the Crown for the Settlement of the Ngai Tahu claim with specific responsibility for land matters and the Right of First Refusal.

He is a Director on the Hurunui District Council’s Hanmer Pools & Spa Board and a Trustee of The Art and Industry Biennial Trust. He is a member of the board of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and of the National Council of the Property Council New Zealand.

His interests outside of business include rugby, rowing and fishing.
