Top scholars receive Prime Minister's awards

Acting Prime Minister, Hon Bill English, will present prizes to the top scholars of Victoria University's School of Government programmes at the School’s seventh anniversary celebrations on 14 October

The celebrations will be held at the Pipitea Campus, Rutherford House Lecture Theatre One, from 6pm.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Pat Walsh says, “The School of Government is now seven years old and remains a leader in public policy analysis and research. It is also New Zealand’s pre-eminent centre for education of public sector leaders, building on Victoria’s long-standing reputation in this field.”

“We turn out some of the country’s top public servants and we are pleased that the Government is recognising some of our best and brightest students.”

Mr English will present three of the seven prizes, which are the Prime Minister's Prizes for the students with the highest grade point average in their overall Masters Programme. All three are ‘straight A’ students.

Details of the winners:

Deanne Wong is a medical doctor and lawyer and spent six years in clinical practice at various hospitals in Wellington, and will receive the Prime Minister's Prize in Public Policy. During her Master’s in Public Policy degree, she wrote a research paper on the Health and Disability Commissioner and the development of the complaints resolution process. This research combined her expertise in both the medical and legal fields.

Grant Fletcher, currently working in the Government Communications Security Bureau, will receive the Prime Minister's Prize in Public Management.

Jehan Casinader, who is currently studying public policy and law will receive the SOLGM/Local Government Careers Academic Prize in Public Policy as recognition for receiving the highest grade in PUBL 201 Introduction to Public Policy.

Joanna Heslop, of Scottish and Ngati Ruanui descent, who joined the International Security and Disarmament Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will receive the Prime Minister's Prize in Strategic Studies. Her research focused on strategic culture.

Grant Fletcher, will also receive the Holmes Prize in Public Policy, for research that focused on New Zealand urban public transport systems to draw lessons and insights for enhancing performance. The Holmes Prize is awarded to the best research paper or thesis in the Master of Public Policy, Public Management, or Strategic Studies programmes.=

Hannah Wilson will receive the Bernard Galvin Prize for her research into the differences between the labour supply for men and women as part of her course in public economics. Hannah is studying for an Honours degree in Public Policy, and also has a Law degree from VUW. The Bernard Galvin Prize is awarded annually to a student in the School who has demonstrated the best application of economic analysis to public policy or public management

Christopher Robert Scott, recently deployed as a Police Policy Advisor to the Solomon Islands, will receive the Laurie Cameron Scholarship. He is completing his research project on accountability arrangements in the New Zealand Police.

The Laurie Cameron Scholarship was established in memory of the late Laurie Cameron, awarded to students whose research ensures private sector engagement with issues of governance, and the promotion of ethical behaviour in both the public and the private sectors

Alexandra Chapman is currently a fifth year law and commerce student and majoring in public policy and will complete her studies in 2010 and start with legal firm Russell McVeagh. She has been awarded the Institute of Public Administration New Zealand Prize.

The Institute of Public Administration New Zealand Prize is awarded annually to the best undergraduate student in public administration.
