Young entrepreneurs take own career path

Making money is often not the primary reason for young entrepreneurs starting a business, says management researcher Kate Lewis. Many see their occupation not just as a job but a calling.

Ms Lewis, who graduates on Friday with a PhD in management from the College of Business at Massey’s Wellington campus, conducted a survey of 10 people under 30 from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch who had started their own business and identified themselves as young entrepreneurs.

She found a deep connection between them and their company, which also spread into other aspects of their life. They had often rejected more traditional career paths in the corporate sector.
