Experienced senior executive appointed to Chief Operating Officer at Victoria
Victoria University has appointed Andrew Simpson to the newly-created position of Chief Operating Officer.
Mr Simpson has been involved in the management of universities since 1990. Most recently, he was Vice-Principal (Operations & Finance) at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada from 2003 until 2008.
Prior to that, he was the University of Waikato’s Chief Operating Officer (2001-2003), Director Finance & Resources (1999-2000) and Director Financial Services (1997-1998). He has also held positions at the former Central Institute of Technology in Wellington, the University of Otago and Ernst & Young.
In the Chief Operating Officer role, reporting to Victoria University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Pat Walsh, Mr Simpson will provide strategic leadership, oversight and guidance on a broad range of University-wide issues and developments.
“Andrew brings a wealth of strategic and operational management experience to this role from his national and international career in the university sector. I am delighted he has accepted this position and I look forward to working with him as Victoria University implements its new strategic plan,” says Professor Walsh.
“This is a new role that will be influential in shaping the future direction for the University to enable it to meet the challenges facing all New Zealand universities,” he says.
Mr Simpson says he is delighted to accept the new role.

“I am thrilled to be joining the leadership team at Victoria University and contributing to the ongoing success of this great institution. The new portfolio consists of a highly talented group of people who I very much look forward to working with. I am impressed with the direction of the University, as outlined in the Strategic Plan, and I am looking forward to assisting in its implementation,” he says.
Mr Simpson will be a member of the University’s Senior Management Team and be responsible for Information Technology Services, Central Student Administration, Facilities Management, Communications, Marketing, Online Services and Student Recruitment.
Mr Simpson holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Otago and is a registered New Zealand Chartered Accountant.
He will take up the position on 18 May 2009.
