Teaching excellence in Commerce at Lincoln University acknowledged
Teaching excellence in Lincoln University’s Commerce Division has seen two academics honoured with awards for the second and third times respectively.
Senior Lecturer Dr Sidney Weil, winner of a Lincoln University Teaching Award for Excellence in 1999 has been recognised again in the latest round of awards along with colleague Associate Professor Chris Gan who wins a Lincoln University Teaching Award for the third time,
A winner previously in 1997 and 2003, Dr Gan is also a past winner of a national tertiary teaching award.
Dr Weil, a staff member at Lincoln University since 1995 won his award for the teaching of Accounting subjects.
His teaching techniques include the use of web-based case studies to facilitate the development of competencies specified by the Professional Accounting School of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.
He actively mentors tutors and colleagues in the Accounting Group of Lincoln University’s Commerce Division and is an extremely active researcher in the field of teaching and has numerous publications to his credit in the field of accounting education research.
Student evaluations consistently rate him in the top 10 percent of lecturers.
Associate Professor Gan has been a Lincoln University staff member since 1993 and heads the Commerce Division’s Economics and Finance Group.
His latest award specifies his excellence in teaching Finance and Economics subjects and he too is consistently ranked in the top 10 percent of lecturers by student evaluations.

Dr Gan seek to create a “student centred” classroom in which students participate in directing their objectives while he acts as a guide working side by side with them. He incorporates several different methods in his teaching to accommodate various learning styles and expects his students to be actively involved in the learning process.
Lincoln University has been recognising teaching excellence among its staff with annual awards since 1990.
About Lincoln University’s Commerce Division
The Commerce Division is the largest of the four divisions at Lincoln University, accounting for around 40 percent of total student numbers. The Commerce Division provides teaching, research and professional services in the areas of Accounting, Business Management and Law, Economics, Finance, Marketing and Property. It has an extremely active Postgraduate Programme with around 130 postgraduate students currently enrolled, including 40 PhDs. It also has an established Executive Development Programme (EDP) aimed at managers and professionals who are unable to study fulltime on campus.
