Smaller Class Sizes for Year 1 Primary Students

Labour's Promise

Labour will put around 1,300 extra primary teachers in new entrants classes over the next three years to ensure that by 2008 there are no more than 15 students in a class.

Labour's Track Record

Labour has already improved quality in our primary schools by:

• Putting 1,050 more teachers into primary and intermediate schools.

• Improving the pay of primary teachers to ensure that there are incentives to teach in our primary schools.

• Increasing school operations grants by 39% since 1999 (14.4% when adjusted for roll growth and inflation).

• Introducing the asTTLe Assessment Tools for Teaching and Learning to better inform teachers about the learning needs of pupils, enabling them to make better-informed teaching decisions.

• Getting high speed Internet to the gate of every school in the country.

• Funding laptops for 25,500 teachers and principals to assist them to access information and resources and carry out their teaching and administrative tasks where and when they need to.

• Providing free software licences to schools and increased professional development on ICT to assist schools grasp technology opportunities.

• Boosting literacy and numeracy learning resources, programmes and assessment.

• Boosting school property funding, to address deferred maintenance and ensure schools can provide modern, up to date learning
