Why is the Government legislating for powers it already has ?
The Hon Steve Maharey has announced that, if passed, the Education (Limiting Number of Universities) Amendment Bill he introduced yesterday will limit the number of universities in New Zealand to eight.
As the Minister already has the power to approve or decline the number of universities in New Zealand, perhaps he could explain why he is wasting the taxpayer's money and House time on unnecessary legislation, says Opposition Tertiary Education Spokesman Maurice Williamson.
